John Lewis (J.L.) Mitchell, 84, Dungannon, VA passed away, Friday, March 28, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

John was born in Scott County, VA on October 28, 1940, and was the son of the late James Monroe and Clidie Lee (Johnson) Mitchell.

In addition to his parents, his infant sister and brothers, Glen Everett Elam, James Elam, and Dallas Elam preceded him in death.

Surviving is his wife, Stella Mae Mitchell, daughter, Norma J. Hensley and husband, Greg, stepson, Josh Baker and Nikki, grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth (Hensley) Lawson and husband, Austin, Greg Hensley, step grandchildren. Jaron Baker, Jaxon Baker, and Jace Baker, great grandchildren, Madeline Jean Lawson, Maverick Koe Lawson, and Matthias John Lawson (expected in September), sister, Joyce Ann Elam, along with several nieces and nephews, and his special care givers, Clara Rose, Angel McCoy Moore, Molly Morgan, and Kaitlan (Lane) Brooks.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. James Mann, and Rev. Terry Rhoton officiating. Durham’s Chapel Singers will provide the music.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at the Mitchell/Salyers Cemetery, Nickelsville, VA,

VDOT employees will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
