Fred Martin Jennings – Gate City, VA
Fred M. Jennings, 90, Gate City, VA passed away, Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after injuries sustained from a fall while mowing his yard.
Mr. Jennings was born in Scott County, VA on January 2, 1925. He was the son of the late James Ross and Amanda Jane (Williams) Jennings.
During his early life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and gardening.
Later he enjoyed long walks, baking his own bread, attending sporting events that involved his children and grandchildren and occasionally working with his son and wife at their business. For many years he kept the bluegill population at bay on Patrick Henry Lake.
He was a proud World War II veteran of the United States Army stationed in Iceland.
Fred retired from the Mead Corporation after working in the Lab for 39 years.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Weber City, VA.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Lillian Faye Quillen Jennings (1995); daughter, Brenda C. McMurray; sister, Hazel Marie Harris; brothers, Lawrence Eugene (Gene) Jennings, Rufus Carroll Jennings, Hubert Guy (Shorty) Jennings, James Ross (Jimmy) Jennings II.; and half brother, Ralph Earnest Jennings preceded him in death.
Surviving Mr. Jennings is his son, F. Martin Jennings II and wife, Barbara, Kingsport, TN; daughter, Lisa Faye Jennings Bishop and husband, Steven, Gate City, VA; granddaughters; Leslie McMurray Hensley and husband, Justin, Ashton Bishop and fiancé, Chance Williams, and Santana Bishop; grandsons; Stephen McMurray and wife Michelle, Timothy Crigger and wife Sherry, Andrew Crigger, and Derek Bishop and wife Kaylee; great grandchildren; Nathaniel Crigger, Kaleb McMurray, Elora Konkol, Mather Konkol, Scout Bishop, Walker Bishop, Lane Bishop, and Neyland Hensley; sister, Mary Lena Prutsman and husband, Gerald, Jacksboro, TN; and special friend, Oneida Crowder, Blountville, TN; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday September 23, 2015 at the Gate City Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Dr. Lester D. Morelock officiating. Jiggs Willis will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Thursday September 24, 2015 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard. Justin Hensley, Chance Williams, Timothy Crigger, Andrew Crigger, Stephen McMurray, and Jeff Edds will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:15 p.m. to go in procession to the graveside service.
