Wiley I. “Ike” Hurd – Duffield, VA
Wiley I. Hurd, 86, Duffield, VA passed away, Saturday, February 24, 2018 at his residence with his loving family at his side.
Ike was born in Scott County, VA on December 8, 1931 to the late Mylum Clyde and Georgia Emily (Palmer) Hurd.
Ike was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Leona, who preceded him in death in May of last year. He was a loving brother to Ruth Smith, Ethel Edens, and Edellas Winegar who also preceded him in death.
Ike was a devout Christian. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. He served as a Deacon at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church for many years. He worked at the Kingsport Press for 37 years 5 months and 5 days before retiring. He had several special friends from work whom he kept in contact with until their passing. Ike served in the Army protecting his country in the Korean War from 1952-1954 when he received an honorable discharge. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge of Clinchport. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and loved him.
Ike is survived by daughter, Kathy Johnson and husband, Arlis, Duffield, VA; son, Michael Hurd and wife, Katy, Huntersville, NC; grandchildren, Regina Slater and husband, Jason, Duffield, VA and Emily and Ike Hurd, Huntersville, NC; great-granddaughter, Jasmine Slater, Duffield, VA; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Evangelist Kenneth Neeley and Bro. Harold Shoemaker officiating. Bud Williams will provide music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 1, 2018, at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family wishes to send a thank you to his special friend, Charlie Darnell, cousin, Wayne Hurd, Dr. Josh Morris, Dr. Kamesh Sivagnanam, and especially to his angel, Kim Townsend, for her loving care of Ike.
