Ruby Fletcher Horton – Duffield, VA

On Saturday October 30, 2010 Ruby Fletcher Horton of Duffield, VA, age of 86 with family by her side, went to be with the Lord at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital after a period of declining health. She was born October 19, 1924 to the late Charlie and Bertha Hartgrove Fletcher of Rye Cove, VA. Ruby was a graduate of Rye Cove High School and attended Mountain Empire Community College. As a career she worked for Scott County School System for 30 years as a homebound and substitute teacher. She was committed to teaching and serving children.
Ruby was a very devout Christian who loved and served the Lord. She was a lifelong member of Riggs Chapel Church and served as Sunday School Teacher and Secretary/Treasurer for many years. She later attended Kaylors Chapel with her daughter and family. For 20 years she served as treasurer and was recognized for her outstanding and dedicated service with the Disabled American Veterans of Big Stone Gap, VA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted and loving husband, James Elmer Horton, in 2008, twin infant brothers, sister, Bernice Fletcher, and brother, Hagan Fletcher.
She is survived by her daughter, Doris Horton Duncan and son-in-law, Bobby Duncan of Duffield, VA; grandson, Scottie Duncan and wife, Susan; granddaughter, Robin Duncan Blair and husband, Travis; great grandchildren, Madison and Ashton Blair, and Cole Duncan; sisters, Emogene Wright and brother-in-law, W.H. Wright, and Beulah Herron and brother-in-law, Joe Herron; brothers, Clarence Fletcher and sister-in-law, Sue, Bobby Fletcher and sister-in-law, Mary, Ted Fletcher and sister-in-law, Ilene; sister-in-law, Frances Bostic and husband, Vernon. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. The family would also like to recognize her special friendship with Sharon Page and Joyce Tipton.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Monday, November 1, 2010 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Brother T. J. Hood, Brother Bill Tignor, and Pastor David Kern officiating. The Garry Hood Singers will provide the music. A eulogy will be given by Nancy Rhoton.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Scottie Duncan, Travis Blair, Eddie Wright, Joe Herron, Leonard Rhoton, Danny Page, James Miller, and Gennis Ford will serve as pallbearers. W.H. Wright and Vernon Bostic will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will be meeting at the funeral home at 12:15 p.m., Tuesday to go in procession to the graveside service.
