Otis Odell Herron, 77, went to be with his Heavenly father Tuesday, February 24, 2009 after an extended illness ? leaving behind a host of family and friends who will miss him greatly in the forth coming days.
Otis was employed by Eastman Kodak until he retired in 1993 after 26 years of service. He had worked several years at Bays Mountain and had farmed during the early years of his life. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, going to the flea market and talking with friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Rosa Herron; a sister, Thelma Herron; brothers, Cecil Herron and Alfred Herron; daughter, Joann Freeman; grandson, Joshua Freeman; mother and father in law, Kelly and Ellen Tipton.
Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years, Hazel Herron; daughter, Carolyn Tipton and husband, Howard; granddaughter, Carrie Lloyd and husband, Daniel; sister, Mattie Russell; brothers and sisters-in-law, Guy Tipton, Nannie Bishop, Wilma Sloan, Lucille Tipton, Jack Tipton, Barbara Tipton, Glenna Herron, and Louise Herron; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends anytime at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Howard Tipton, Gate City, VA and from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2009 at Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Collins and Pat Hammond officiating. Music will be provided by the Moneyhun Singers.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, February 27, 2009 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. The family will meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ricky France, Larry Tipton, Tony Tipton, Randy Tipton, Tracy Tipton and Tommy Freeman.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Winegar, Jim Thacker, Jack Tipton and Johnny Quillen.
Gate City Funeral Home is honored be serving the Herron family.
