Hiltons, VA – William Bates Hensley, 88, entered into rest Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Johnson City Medical Center.
He was born September 19, 1921 in Scott County, VA to the late Bill and Mina Hensley. Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Hensley and one sister, Madeline Lunsford.
Mr. Hensley served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was wounded in France and received the Purple Heart.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Dwight Porter, Gray, TN, Phyllis and Elliott Smith, Gate City, VA; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Kathy Hensley, Kingsport, TN; brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Margaret Hensley, Galax, VA; grandchildren, Kevin Smith, Heather Smith, Amanda Porter, Chad Hensley and Laura Cyphers; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2010 at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be held at 7 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Grady Winegar officiating.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA conducted by Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the V.F.W.
The family will meet at the cemetery for the graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Greg Smith, Danny Smith, Andy Smith, Chris Fugate, Tom Fugate and Eric Fugate.
Gate City Funeral is serving the Hensley family.
