Mr. William D. Harris, 84, Dungannon, VA passed away, Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home, Duffield, VA.
Mr. Harris was born in Arkansas on October 6, 1926, the son of the late William Thomas and Gracie Brammon Harris. He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority as a carpenter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Smith Harris, son, Edward Harris, and several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his daughters, Betty Kerns and husband, Henry, Dungannon, VA, Dorothy Jennings and husband, Ralph, Gate City, VA, and Brenda Blevins and husband, Bob, Bristol, TN; sons, Carl W. Harris and wife, Joanna, Ft. Blackmore, VA and Richard Harris and wife, Lora, Columbus, OH; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Opal Voyles, AK; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, March 29 2011 at the Gate City Funeral Home and anytime at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Denny Hass officiating. Toke Hensley will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN, and Post #265, Gate City, VA, assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at the Strong Cemetery, Gate City, VA. Danny Darnell, Mark Dingus, Henry Kerns, Ralph Jennings, and Buddy Kerns will serve as pallbearers. His faithful friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m.to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family wishes to convey a special thank you to the nursing staff of Ridgecrest Manor, Duffield, VA for their loving care of Mr. Harris.
