Harold Lee "Ray" Hammonds, 75, of the Manville community of Gate City, VA went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 24, 2010.
Born in Scott County, VA on May 24, 1935, he was the son of the late Henry Newton and Virgie Emily McDavid Hammonds. He retired from the Tennessee Eastman after twenty-eight years of service working in the CE Department.
He attended Tipton's Chapel Independent Freewill Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed.
Sisters, Lula Jennings, Lizzie Tipton, and brothers, Bradley and Johnnie Hammonds preceded him in death.
Surviving is his wife, Louise Hammonds, Gate City, VA; sons, Christopher Hammonds, Gate City, VA, and Barry Tipton, Kingsport, TN; granddaughters, Hannah Brooke and Alanah Maria Hammonds; sisters, Nannie Myrtle Jones, Gate City, VA, Ettie Marie Spivey, Gate City, VA, and Shirley Magdalene Tipton, and husband, Coy, Weber City, VA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Lillian Hammonds, Gray, TN, Ben and Marie Hammonds, Gate City, VA, Bob and Lynn Hammonds, Kingsport, TN, Odell Hammonds, Kingsport, TN, Jim Hammonds, Kingsport, TN, and Gene Hammonds, Kingsport, TN; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Joe Roberts, the Rev. Rex McMurray, and the Rev. Garland Tipton officiating. Ronnie Tipton and Nancy Tipton will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hammonds Family Cemetery on Copper Ridge in the Manville community. Dan Spivey, Marty Combs, Greg Tipton, Shannon Hammonds, Steve Hammonds and Danny Hammonds will serve as pallbearers. James Jones, Keith Hammonds, Johnny Hammonds, John Gary Tipton, Larry Spivey, and Mickey Spivey will serve as honorary pallbearers.
