Lillian Marie Owens Hammonds, 90, Gray, TN, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away, Tuesday, June 17, 2014 surrounded by her family at home praising her Lord as she went to Heaven.
Lillian had a green thumb and her table was always filled. Her love will last forever in the hearts of those she left behind.
Born in Scott Count, VA on January 23, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Wayland E. and Alta Rhoton Owens and Laura Owens.
In addition to her parents, her husband, H.A. “Bill” Hammonds (2013); daughter, Patsy Hammonds; sons, Glen, Fred, and Ellis Hammonds; sisters, Pauline Markham, Loreen Stone, and Delphia Brennan; and brothers, Newford Owens, Otis Owens, Tom Owens, Buddy Dorton, Lonnie Owens, Lucian Owens, Jack Owens, and Roy Dorton preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughters, Marcelina McNeese and husband, Odie, Nashville, TN, Erma McCulley and husband, John, Gray, TN, and Juanita Dishner and husband, Curtis, Gray, TN; son, Keith Hammonds and wife, Arlene, Gray, TN; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren, daughters-in-law, Dorothy Hammonds, Manville community, Gate City, VA, Mary Hammonds, Johnson City, TN, and Debbie Hammonds, Nashville, TN; sister, Jearlene Alley, Stanleytown, VA; brothers, Dexter Owens, Stanleytown, VA, Rex Owens and wife, Delphine, Daytona, FL, and Elmer Dorton, Norton, VA; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Erma McCulley. Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Rex Owens and Rev. Jimmy Combs officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, June 22, 2014 at the Hammonds Family Cemetery in the Copper Ridge community of Scott County, VA. Tony Story, Michael Hammonds, Cody Lackey, Caleb Dishner, Shannon Hammonds, Danny Hammonds, and Shane Nelson will serve as pallbearers.
Dwayne Lance, Dale Hammonds, Jack Davis, Jr., James Sexton, and B.J. Dishner will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family would like to give special thanks to (Delta) Dawn Story, Dr. McMillan and the Ameisys Hospice staff; and to their extended family, Dean Tucker, K.P. and Jean Stafford, and Mary and Carl Harshbarger for their love and support.
