Shelby Dougherty Hammond, 71, entered into rest Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was born in Scott County, VA May 8, 1937 to the late James Howard Hammond and Nora Myrtle Penley.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from Slip-Knot Belting Corporation after 38 years of service.
Survivors include one son, Timothy Scott and wife, Pamela Hammond, Bristol, VA; sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Peggy Cloud and husband, Neal, Gate City, VA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin and wife, Dorothy Hammond, Sullivan Gardens, TN, Richard Wayne and wife, Linda Hammond, Gate City, VA; granddaughter, Kristen Hammond; nephew, Roger Hammond; nieces, Brenda Meade, Debbie Manis, Jennifer Snook and Angie Peak.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be at 7 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Jimmie Davidson officiating. Music will be provided by Pamela Hammond.
Military graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA with the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265 and the VA National Honor Guard.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will meet at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
