Leonard R. Hager, Mount Carmel, TN
Chief Master Sergeant, U.S.A.F., retired Leonard R. Hager of Mount Carmel, TN passed away on September 20, 2017 at The Waters of Johnson City Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Hager was born in Ramage, WV on February 5, 1929. He proudly served his country until 1975, participating in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, earning many awards and citations including:
• The Air Force Commendation Medal (1965-1967)
• The Air Force Commendation Medal, First Oak Leaf Cluster (1967-1970)
• The Bronze Star with Citation to Accompany while in Thailand 1970-1971
• Meritorious Service Medal (1971-1972)
• Thailand Supreme Commander’s Forward Master Badge
• Thailand Border Police Counterinsurgency Badge
• The 21st Air Division’s Outstanding Security Police NCO (Thule Air Base, Greenland)
• The 15st Air Force Outstanding Security Police NCO (Grand Forks, ND)
• The Air Force Commendation Medal, Second Oak Leaf Cluster with Citation (1972)
• Meritorious Service Medal, Second Oak Leaf Cluster 1973-1975
After retiring from the military, Mr. Hager worked as the Finance Manager for Kingsport Motors for several years. In his retirement, Mr. Hager loved spending time with his grandsons, watching football (especially watching Scott’s football games), and playing golf.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Irma Hager; 2 brothers, Max and Thomas; 4 sisters, Amelia, Mona, Aveonell and Patricia and 2 sisters-in-law, Renee and Patricia.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jayne McConnell Hager; daughter Jayna Hager McConnell and husband Jeff; grandsons J. Scott McConnell and wife Jessica, and Cameron Blake McConnell; sister-in-law Lynn McConnell Peters; brother-in-law John L. McConnell, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., at Gate City Funeral Home in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m., with Chaplain Richard Long officiating. Music will be provided by Judy McConnell and Joel Jenkins.
Burial will be on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., at Holston View Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Kingsport Hammond Post 3 and Gate City Post 265 of the American Legion.
Pallbearers are J. Scott McConnell, Tim Hager, David Hager, Craig Hager, Michael Scott Hager, Gregory Hager, Shane Ratliff, Steve Poston and Mark Fish.
Honorary Pallbearers are Jeff McConnell, Cameron Blake McConnell, John L. McConnell, Thomas Hager (dec.), Max Hager (dec.), Ralph Nelson, Don Billings, Steve Epperson, and Darnell McConnell.
The family would like to send special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of The Waters in Johnson City for their compassion, concern, and care of Mr. Hager.
