Leo H. Hackler, 88, Gate City, VA was healed to Heaven with his family by his side at Holston Manor, Kingsport, TN, Saturday, February 7, 2009.
Leo was born on December 9, 1920 in Stanleytown, and was the eldest child of Crawford Leo and Ova Elizabeth Stallard Hackler.
He was a graduate of Rye Cove High School and Whitney Business School.
A World War II veteran, Leo served in the Navy as a member of the 47th Seabees Battalion in the Solomon Islands and Guadal Canal Campaigns. He was active in the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the V.F.W. for sixteen years. Leo served in two thousand two hundred and five military funerals as Chaplin of the unit.
He loved Jesus and was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Gate City and was the eldest male charter member of Community Fellowship Baptist. In both churches he sang praises in the choir and served as a Deacon. In 2000 he was recognized as Deacon Emeritus.
Leo retired in 1987 from Dixie Bearings, Kingsport, TN where he worked in sales, as a coal specialist, and Branch Manager for thirty-seven years. Southwest Virginia, hunting, trout fishing, camping and the outdoors were a great part of his life. He stayed active serving others until his illness in 2007.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant sister, Ilene, his brother, Duard and brother-in-law, Zane Carter.
Surviving is the love of his life and wife of sixty-two years, Ella Sue Newton Hackler, Gate City, VA, son, Michael Hackler and wife, Sherry, Gray, TN, daughter, Teresa Head and husband, Terry, Gray, TN, grandchildren, Neil Hackler, Angie Johnson and husband, Robert, Brandon Head and wife, Jessica, and Brittani Head, step grandchildren, Gabrielle and Cody Lopez, great grandchildren, Haley Williams, Bryson Johnson, Ethan, Emily and Ella Head, step great grandchildren, Katelin and Tiffany Johnson, sisters, Tania Egan and husband, Lyle, Kingsport, TN, Mozelle Carter, Duffield, VA, and Lotus Butler and husband, George, Duffield, VA, sister-in-law, Lorraine Hackler, Kingsport, TN, brothers, Max Hackler and wife, Joan, Kingsport, TN and Rev. Howell Hackler and wife, Christine, Loveland, OH along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at the Community Fellowship Baptist Church, 154 Broadwater Avenue (beside Gate City Vocational School). Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. at the church with the Rev. John Sheppard, the Rev. Howell Hackler and Roy Newton officiating. Music will be provided by Judy McConnell.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA with the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the V.F.W.
Neil Hackler, Brandon Head, Robert Johnson, Danny Kilgore, Terry Hackler, Ron Triplett, Eddie Shell, Brent Herron and Charlie Chapman will serve as pallbearers. N.M. Moore, Charles Sigmon, Jim Thornton, Bob Lewis, Ray Chapman, Harold Cornett and Alvin Clark will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at 10:15 a.m., Wednesday at Gate City Funeral Home to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Ronald Hunter and to the staff of Holston Manor who tenderly assisted Leo.
