Errett B. (E.B.) Gray, Jr.

Gate City, VA On Friday, April 24, 2009 with his daughters at his side, Errett Gray completed his life journey.
Born on July 12, 1922, E.B. (Jitter) was the second of three children and first son born to Martha Dell Blackwell Gray and Errett Bascom Gray, Sr. E.B. grew up in Dungannon, VA surrounded by a large family and many dear friends.
He had a wonderful childhood playing baseball, riding his pony and bird hunting with his dogs. He graduated from Dungannon High School in 1939, and continued his education at Emory and Henry College where he majored in Chemistry. In December 1942, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in support of the WWII effort. He returned from service in 1946 and graduated from Emory and Henry College. In 1948, E.B. married Anne Taylor Craft of Gate City, VA where they lived together for thirty-five years and raised their daughters. E.B. was employed as the Secretary-Treasurer of R.G. Craft Distributorship and served as the Vice-President of Craft Transport Company.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of both the First National Bank of Gate City and the Lenowisco Planning District Commission. He was also a member of the American Legion and served a term as president of the Moccasin Hills Country Club. Late in life E.B. enjoyed a second career working for his close friend Gorman Barger at the Big Break Exxon Station in Weber City, VA.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Anne, E.B. was preceded in death by his sister, Selby M. Gray, and brother, Jack Blackwell Gray.
E.B. is survived by his daughters, Karen Robinette and husband, John, Valerie Burcham and fiancé, Steve Gibbons, Martha Lane and husband, Marshall, Selby Millard and husband, Randall, and Sara Nichols and husband, Bruce. He also leaves his grandchildren Adam Robinette, Sara Lane, Thomas Robinette, Stephanie Burcham Wood and husband, George, Anne Lane, Stacy Burcham, Drew Millard and Errett Kane Nichols.
The family will receive friends from 4:30p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Sunday, April 26, 2009 in the Juanita S. Falin Memorial Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home. A Service of Remembrance will be conducted at 6:00 p.m.
A private Military Graveside service will be conducted Monday, April 27, 2009 by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 of Kingsport and # 265 of Gate City, VA.
Sons-in-law and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Dr. James Thornton, Johnny Steffey, Gorman Barger, Darrell Dougherty and Chuck Templeton will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to either The Parkinson's Foundation, P.O. Box 182, Milligan College, TN 37682, the Scott County Life Saving Crew, P.O. Box 1088, Gate City, VA 24251, or Emory and Henry College, 30461 Garland Drive, Meadowview, VA 24361, in the name of E.B. Gray, Jr.
