Luther C. Gilliam, 87, Duffield, VA passed away peacefully, Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at his residence.
Mr. Gilliam was born in Lee County, VA on November 2, 1926 to the late Emory and Laura Frazier Gilliam. He was a coal miner, retiring from Westmoreland Coal Company and worked from his childhood supporting his younger siblings and then his own children. He loved the mountains, and if not tending his beloved garden, he could be found hiking the mountain with his sidekick, Cody Dog, where he spent the majority of his 87 years.
In addition to his parents, a granddaughter; 2 great grandsons; sister, Venus Rogers and brothers, Millard Gilliam, Don Gilliam, and E.M. Gilliam preceded him in death.
He is survived by his faithful wife of 64 years, Faye Jessee Gilliam, Duffield, VA; daughters, Cathy Breedlove, Knoxville, TN, Janie Stapleton and husband, Sam, Duffield, VA, Becky McDaries and husband, Kenneth, Big Stone Gap, VA, Margaret Kaylor and husband, John, Duffield, VA, Angela Gottwald and husband, John, Richmond, VA, and Meagen Hood and husband, Brad, Gate City, VA; sons, Jerry Gilliam, Dunbar, VA, Ronnie Gilliam and wife, Pamela, Duffield, VA, and Donnie Gilliam and wife, Linda, Duffield, VA; twenty grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Rogers, Duffield, VA, Bonnie Bishop, Duffield, VA, and Marie Bishop, Duffield, VA; brothers, Lorin Gilliam, Duffield, VA and Elbert Gilliam, Church Hill, TN; along with several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2014 at the Gilliam Family Cemetery, Blackgum Lane, Duffield, VA with Pastor Chuck Grimm officiating. Grandsons, Dustin Gilliam, Jon McDaries, Cory McDaries, Sam Stapleton, Jerry Gilliam, and Gregory Jones will serve as pallbearers. Grandsons, Warriner Gottwald and Collin “Tyler” Hood will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for the graveside service.
