Curtis Gilliam, 92, Duffield, VA passed away, Monday, January 27, 2014 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Gilliam was born in Tazewell County, VA on October 22, 1921 to the late Charlie and Pearl Rhodes Gilliam.
Curtis was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a decorated Veteran who served in the Normandy Invasion of 1942 with the United States Army.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Edith Dockery Gilliam; great grandson, Chase Sams; paternal grandfather, George Gilliam; brothers, Ralph Gilliam, Luther Gilliam, Jr., Ray Gilliam, Virgil Gilliam, Robert Gilliam, and Clarence Gilliam; sister , Bertha Griffin preceded her in death.
He is survived by his sons, Harold Gilliam and wife, Ann, Church Hill, TN and Jimmy Gilliam and wife, Sherry, Church Hill, TN; grandchildren, Clayton Gilliam, Jessica Sams, and Aerial Gilliam; great grandchildren, Jacob, Haley, and Kurtis Gilliam, and Hunter and Mikahala Sams; sisters, Gladys Feathers, Johnson City, TN, Helen Jessie, Duffield, VA, Freda Stanley Hommel, Kingsport, TN and Mabel Spiva; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel with Evangelist Kenneth Neeley officiating.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Post #3382 of the V.F.W. and Post #265 of Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:15 p.m., Thursday to go in procession to the graveside service.
