Fred Gillenwater – Gate City, VA
Fred Rhea Gillenwater, 81, Gate City, VA passed away, Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Fred was born in Scott County, VA on February 18, 1936. He was the son of the late Milton and Mima Stallard Gillenwater
Fred graduated from Dungannon High School. He joined the military at a young age and served 3 years in Korea. Fred spent 38 years at AFG glass plant in Hawkins County where he earned the nickname, “Chief”. He also pastored several churches.
In addition to his parents, his brother, Paul Gillenwater; sisters, Myrtle Gillenwater and Nina Catron preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Peters Gillenwater, Gate City, VA; brothers, Russell Gillenwater and wife, Hazel, Maynardville, TN, Dale Gillenwater and wife, Ann, Kingsport, TN, C.E. Gillenwater, Knoxville, TN; sisters, Dorothy Kimbler and husband, William, Gate City, VA, Alice Carter, Ft. Blackmore, VA, Oleone Starnes, Indiana; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the Clinchport Freewill Baptist Church. Masonic services will take place at 1:45 p.m. before the funeral service. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the church with Brother Lee Knowles and Rev. Dusty Wallen officiating. Durham’s Chapel Quartet and The Maness Family will provide the music.
Burial will follow the services at the Family Cemetery in Hill Station Community, VA. Graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Honor Guard. Sissy Babb, Dianna Peters, Travis Sawyer, Roy Egan, Harold Foster, Ray Woliver, Tommy Stanley and Lennis France will serve as pallbearers.
