Clyde Edward Gillenwater – Midway, VA
Born October 18, 1937 to the late Emmett Lee Gillenwater, SR. and Lucy McKinley Davidson Gillenwater in Midway, VA passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Clyde was a native and lifelong resident of Midway, VA and left his earthly afflicted body surrounded by his loving family and finished his journey to Heaven on July 10, 2018.
He was a charter member of Midway Baptist Church, faithfully serving as a founding Deacon, Treasurer, and Trustee from the very beginning until Jesus called him home. He was a loving husband, father, grand-father, and great grandfather with a heart of gold.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during the cold war in Germany with the 4th Armored Division. He retired from AFG Industries in 1998 and was previously employed by Daugherty Brothers Chevrolet, Texaco Service Station, and Gate City Funeral Home.
In addition to his parents, his first-born son, Timmie Edward Gillenwater; sisters, Mallie Vermillion, Zola Peters, Ina Elliott, and brother, Otis Gillenwater preceded him in death.
He leaves behind his loving wife and caregiver of 60 years, Ruth Thacker Gillenwater of the home, his son Terry Gillenwater and wife, Kristi, Kingsport and Tony Gillenwater and wife, Rhonda, Midway, VA; grandsons, Jeremiah Gillenwater and wife, Amy, Gate City, VA, Adam and Aaron Gillenwater, Midway, VA and precious great grandsons, Noah, Abram, and Raylan and his great granddaughter, Arabella Gillenwater; one loving brother, E.L. (Junior) Gillenwater and wife, Dalphine; along with several nieces and nephews and many friends.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Gene Stallard officiating. Buford Quillen and Chris Holder will provide the music.
Military Graveside Services will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of The Virginia Army Guard Honors Team, Gate City, VA at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 15, 2018 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Jeremiah Gillenwater, Adam Gillenwater, Aaron Gillenwater, Larry Gillenwater, Danny Elliott and Bob Blanton will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m., Sunday to go in procession to the graveside service.
