Freddie Fugate ? Hiltons, VA Mr. Freddie Jackson Fugate, 81, Hiltons, VA entered into rest, Sunday, April 13, 2008 at his residence.

Mr. Fugate was born in Scott County, VA on April 15, 1926, the son of the late Thomas H. and Ella Bowlin Fugate. In addition to his parents, sisters, Lucille Hobbs and Flo Stafford and brothers, Milburn, Wako and Joe B. Fugate preceded him in death.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, a graduate of Berea College and received his Master's Degree from the University of Virginia. He attended Nottingham United Methodist Church, Gate City, VA Mr. Fugate came to Hiltons as a teacher in 1948 where he also coached boy's basketball before transferring to teach at Shoemaker from 1955-56. After serving as Assistant Principal at Shoemaker, he returned to Hiltons Elementary as Principal where he served for twelve years, then moving to Gate City High School in 1968 where he served as Principal for three years. Following his service at Gate City High School Mr. Fugate became the Director of Education of the Scott County Board for three years, Assistant Superintendent for eight years and Superintendent for eight years, before retiring in June of 1989.

Surviving is his wife, Ruth Blackburn Fugate, Hiltons, VA, daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Mark Mason, Covington, VA, sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas Fugate, Hiltons, VA, Eric and Jackie Fugate, Gate City, VA, and Chris Fugate, Gate City, VA, grandchildren, Sarah and Zeke Fugate, Erica Fugate, Mike, Kate, Will and Beth Mason and Josh Johnson, sister, Margaret (Peggy) Templeton, Gate City, VA and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the Gate City Funeral Home and any time at the residence

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 16, 2008 in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Bill Porter officiating. Hope Bright will provide the music. Burial will follow the service at the Holston View Cemetery in Weber City, VA.

Danny Hensley, Matt Burns, Greg Ervin, Jeff Jones, Richard Jones and Nick Colobro will serve as pallbearers. Those who wish may make contributions to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001 or to the Nottingham United Methodist Church, 2616 Nottingham Road, Gate City, VA 24251.
