Howard Flanary – Gate City, VA

Howard Flanary 89, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center. Howard was born on March 7, 1923 in Fort Blackmore, VA. He was the last surviving child of Alonzo and Nannie Baker Flanary. Howard accepted the Lord as his personal Savior the age of 85, and since that day he let it be known that he loved everybody. He faithfully attended Midway Baptist Church as long as his health allowed him to do so.

In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his brothers, Amel, Hobart, and Fred Flanary; and sisters, Callie Flanary Rhoton, Marie Flanary Pierson, Dona Flanary Summey, Pearlie Flanary Moore, and Mary Flanary.

Howard is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna Lee Babb Flanary; daughter, Mildred Flanary Lane and husband Dwight; granddaughters, Amy Lane Dooley and husband Michael, and Marsha Lane Barnett and husband Travis; and very special great grandchildren Brevin and Amica Dooley, and Mason and Layton Barnett.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Coy Butler and Rev. Marvin Egan officiating. Midway Melody and Jamie Salyer will provide the music.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 23, 2012 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Danny Pierson, Jackie Pierson, Bill Flanary, Mac Quillin, Charles McConnell, and Bob Blanton will serve as pallbearers. Bill Trent, Carl Gillenwater, Joe Begley, Johnny Brickey, Coy Hall, and United States Army Sergeant Robert Blanton will serve as honorary pallbearers. Family and friends are asked to meet at 12:15 at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to special great niece Rosa Grizzle and Helen Babb for the love and care they have given to Howard during his illness. Also special thanks to 5th Floor ICU Step Down unit at HVH&MC.
