Dewey Flanary – Gate City, VA
Dewey Howard Flanary, 87, Gate City, VA went to be with his Heavenly Father, Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Holston Manor, Kingsport, TN.
Dewey was born in Scott County, VA on May 21, 1927 to the late James V. and Ida Rogers Flanary.
Mr. Flanary served in the U.S. Navy and spent 2 years on the Repair Ship USS Rigel. He worked for 42 years in the CE Division of the Eastman Kodak Company as a welder.
Dewey was a member of Ida Baptist Church, Speers Ferry, VA, where he served as an ordained Deacon, then was a member of Salley’s Chapel Baptist Church, Weber City, VA. He had a wonderful bass voice and sang for 55 years with Ida Quartet, Golden Key Quartet, and Salley’s Chapel Quartet. During those years he felt honored to sing at more than 500 funerals in the area.
In addition to his parents ; his sisters, Marie Hill, Imogene Osborne, Mayleen Flanary, Jeri Wolfe; brothers, J.V., Don and Herman preceded him in death.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65½ years, Colleen Flanary, Gate City, VA; sister, Mary Ann Head and husband, Darius, Maryville, TN; brother, Harry Flanary and wife, Roxie, Pueblo, CO; special nephew, Barry Flanary, Gate City, VA; many loving nieces and nephews; and special couple, David and Diane Jennings.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, November 30, 2014 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. George Winegar and great-nephew Rev. Garin Hill officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 1, 2014 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Barry Flanary, Roger Morrison, Scott Hackney, Gary Fraysier, Edward Carter, and Wendell McClellan will serve as pallbearers. Mac Lane, Mack Edwards, Claude Bledsoe and Vernon McCray will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and Friends are asked to meet at 10:15 a.m Monday at the funeral home to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family would like to extend special thanks to special brother-in-law, Edward Carter; special sister-in-law, Nell McClellan; special nieces, Nelda Hill, Debbie Smith and husband Jerry, Chris Street, Carey Lewis; long-time friends Roger and Linda Morrison, Scott and Reba Hackney; HVMC 3rd floor staff and Holston Manor Rehab 300 wing for their care of Dewey.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Gideon International for Bible purchases in Dewey’s name.
