Dorothy Elkins – Gate City, VA
Dorothy Franklin Elkins, 102, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter in Gate City, VA on Friday, February 6, 2015. She was born June 30, 1912 and lived the majority of her long, active life on the family farm in Rye Cove, VA. She is one of the last survivors of the Rye Cove Cyclone of 1929. After the school was rebuilt, she graduated from Rye Cove Memorial High School in 1931. She devoted her life to caring for her family, working on the family farm and serving her community in many ways.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents James D., Sr. and Lou Wolfenbarger Franklin; her sisters, Kate Tomlinson, Marie Rauschert, and Laura Franklin; and her brothers, Ben Franklin and James D. Franklin, Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Lou Marie Dougherty, Church Hill, TN, Katherine Miller, Gate City, VA and Linda Bobbitte, Gate City, VA; granddaughters, Donna (Gerald) Caldwell, Church Hill, TN, Jennifer (Russ) Davis, Kingsport, TN, Julie Calvert, Lexington, KY, Rachel (Bryan) Hess, Kingsport, TN; great grandchildren, Alex (Laura) Caldwell, Emma Kate Calvert, John Davis, Andrew Calvert, Samantha Hess, Benjamin Davis, C.J. Hess, Nathaniel Davis and Laura Davis; great-great grandson, Will Caldwell; sister-in-law, Mildred O. Franklin; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends and neighbors.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Monday, February 9, 2015 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Don Hanshew and her niece, Rev. Nancy Hobbs officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Franklin Cemetery in Rye Cove, VA. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family gives special thanks for the compassionate care given by the staff of Wellmont Hospice, especially Frieda Woodard, who brightened her last days.
