Roy E. Durham, 74, Gate City, VA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Wexford House.
He had endured a lingering illness of 22 years caused by complications from Multiple Sclerosis. He is now pain free and with his Heavenly Father.
Roy was born in Hodgenesville, Ky on April 18, 1939 to the late William and Ina Lafferty Durham. He was a Christian and member of the First Baptist Church of Weber City, VA and The Sanctuary Church.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in Korea.
In addition to his parents, his sister, Ruth Collins; step-son, James McClanahan; and brothers-in-law, James McElroy and Nick McElroy preceded him in death.
Surviving is his wife, Patsy McElroy Durham, Gate City, VA; sons, Roy Durham, Jr., Duluth, GA, John B. Durham and wife, Theresa, Gate City, VA, and Richard A. Durham and wife, Nancy, Cornwall, VT; step sons, Robert McClanahan, Atlanta, GA, Donald McClanahan, Atlanta, GA, William McClanahan and wife, Diane, Woodstock, GA, and Brent Montgomery, Gate City, VA; 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; and 10 step grandchildren; sisters, Martha D. Tyree, Virginia Beach, VA and Hattie Sue Dobson, Duffield, VA; along with several nieces and nephews, and special friends, Cindy Imler and Crystal Champ.
The family will receive friends from 11-12:30 p.m., Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Paul Blessing and Rev. Lester Morelock officiating. Jiggs Willis will provide the music.
Military graveside services will follow at the Lane Cemetery in Rye Cove, VA, conducted by the American Legion Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Kent Snapp and Larry Snapp will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family wishes to convey a special thanks to his caregivers at Wexford House and to CARIS Hospice Group for their help with Roy that was so appreciated.
