Elsie Juanita Frazier Dougherty, 98 (18 days short of 99), of Nickelsville, VA died March 9, 2009 at Courtyard Nursing Home, Asheville, NC. Born March 27, 1910, she was the oldest child of the late James R. and Pearl McConnell Frazier of Nickelsville. She was also preceded in death by her husband, L. E. "Jack" Dougherty; a daughter Shirley Dougherty Foster; a granddaughter, June Elizabeth Dougherty; a brother, Carl Frazier; three sisters, Jewel Meade, Nancy "Tom" Culbertson Horne, and Lucille McConnell; and sons-in-law, Herley Foster and Hobert Jones.

Her father's home place still stands up the hill beyond the Bush Mill. She said, "We children would hide in the bins until Grandpa Bush said, "If you children don't quit that, I may leave and lock you in here." Her father engaged the family in farming. His emphasis was; get a good education and you won't have to do this. She, along with her three sisters attended Radford College and all became school teachers. Except for her first year at Garfield School, she taught 4th grade at Nickelsville High until retirement.

She was a member of the Nickelsville United Methodist Church where in her earlier years she was Sunday School Secretary and Treasurer, as well as a member of the choir. For many years after retirement, she volunteered with the Senior Citizens group. Before her husband Jack passed away they had traveled to Europe and all 50 states.

Surviving are sons, Winfred A. "Bill" Dougherty and wife, Billie of Peoria, AZ, Ronald J. Dougherty and wife, Bertie of Ashville, NC; daughter, Ramona Rodriguez and husband, Louis of Wichita Fall, TX; grandchildren, Jay Dougherty, Chandler, AZ, Dannette Dougherty Kaiser, Phoenix, AZ, Dwayne Foster, Kingsport, TN, Donna Foster Idom, Nashville, TN, Dalene Foster Renfroe, Proctorville, OH, Mark Dougherty, Wilmington, NC, Rebecca Dougherty Tucker, Asheville, NC, Daniel Dougherty, Mooresville, NC, Rhonda Dougherty Macy, Salisbury, NC, Susan Rodriguez Jones, Dixon, TN, Michael Rodriguez, Houston, TX, Scott Rodriguez, La Porte, TX; great grandchildren, Brendan Kaiser, Andy Foster, Tucker Foster, Mathew Idom, Brian Idom, Rachel Renfroe, Alex Renfroe, Savannah Dougherty, Devon Tucker, Rachel Tucker, Mitchell Tucker, Corrine Dougherty, Cody Dougherty, Jayce Macy, Andrew Jones, Daniel Jones, Emily Jones, Carter Rodriguez, and Faith Rodriguez. She is also survived by her youngest brother, James M. "Jimmy" Frazier of Kingsport, TN; sister-in-law, Evelyn Frazier of Knoxville, TN; brother-in-law, Joseph H. Dougherty and wife, Emily of Tampa, FL, and several nieces and nephews.

The family thanks her special friends, Elizabeth Kilgore of Nickelsville, VA and Jeanette Elliott of Asheville, NC. Funeral services will be at the Nickelsville United Methodist Church, Sunday, March 15, 2009. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 2:00 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. with Pastors Joe Barber and Millard Johnson officiating.

Internment will be at the Holston View cemetery immediately following the service.
