Darrell Patton Dougherty, 83, Gate City, VA passed away, Friday, February 11, 2011 at the Brian Center, Weber City, VA.
Born in Scott County, VA on June 19, 1927, he was the son of the late Sam and Dessie Gillenwater Dougherty.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Nancy Williams Dougherty; sister, Pearl Dougherty, and brothers, Paul and Ralph Dougherty.
Darrell played basketball for Nickelsville High School and attended Lincoln Memorial University prior to operating the Taylor Theaters in the late 1940's and early 1950's. He was also a veteran of the United States Army.
He established the Campus Drive-In in 1955 which continues to be one of Gate City's best known gathering spots for food and conversation. Through the Campus Drive-In, Darrell sponsored and coached a pony-league baseball team for many years.
In the early 1960's , Darrell was public address announcer at the old Kane Field in Gate City, and until his health deteriorated, he attended most Gate City football games and actively supported other Gate City athletic programs. Darrell was a fan to the end.
Darrell worked with other Gate City business leaders in the early 1960's to help establish the Scott County Park and Golf Course.
A former two-term member of the Gate City Town Council, he also served four terms as Mayor of Gate City. He was active in the Gate City United Methodist Church and President of the Men's Club for many years.
He is survived by his son, Allen Dougherty and daughter-in-law, Debra, who continue to reside in Gate City, VA; granddaughters, Beth Dougherty and Lisa Baker and husband, Todd, and a great grandson, Brett Baker.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m., Monday, February 14, 2011 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his son. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. John Hackney officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Tim Dougherty, Stan Rogers, John Miller, Henry (Bucky) Clabaugh, Tom Hilton, and Pat Loggans will serve as pallbearers. Elliott Smith, the Saw Mill Gang at the Campus, John Stallard, Bill Stallard, and Doug Humphries will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at Gate City Funeral Home at 10:15 a.m., Tuesday to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family wishes to convey their thanks to Darrell's special care givers, Brenda Salling and Jimmy Lane for their love and support, and to Dr. Paul Black and the nursing staff of the Brian Center.
