“For I am meek and lowly in heart” Matthew 11:29
James Elmer Dorton went home to be with his Savior on April 4, 2015. He was born on April 3, 1922, as the son of Laura Fletcher and George Dorton, and he died the child of a King. Although Elmer was uneducated in the eyes of man, he was wise in that he treated everyone in a Christ-like manner. Elmer was both friendly and a friend to others.
At the age of 28, Elmer began living with his brother G. B. (Buddy) and Verna Dorton and was blessed to be both a member of his family and Buddy’s family until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, Laura Fletcher Dorton Owens and George Dorton; his step-father, Wayland Owens; nephews Gary and Garnie Dorton of his home; brothers Buddy and Roy Dorton; brothers Newford, Otis, Tom, Lonnie, Lucian, and Jack Owens; sisters Lorraine Stone, Pauline Markham, Lillian Hammonds, and Delphia Brennan.
Elmer is survived by his special sister-in-law, Verna Dorton; nieces Janice (Bobby) Wines, Bobbie (James) Sweeney, Norma (Ronnie) Calhoun, and Wanda (David) Parsons; nephew Ricky Dorton; sister Jerroline Alley, and brothers Rex and Dexter Owens; and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Reverend Rex Owens and David Parsons officiating.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Hall Cemetery in the Stanleytown community. Pallbearers will be Mike Sweeney, Jerry Wines, Daniel Sweeney, Fabian Spears, Kameron Spears, and Scotty Jennings. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:00 noon to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family would like to give special thanks to all of the staff at Ridgecrest Manor for their service to Elmer.
