Don William Salyer – Nicklesville, VA 

Donald William Salyer passed away Friday, January 31, 2025, at his residence.

Donald was born in Scott County, VA on August 24, 1944, and was the son of the late Ezra and Maggie (Page) Salyer.

He was a devoted, loving husband and father. He was a member of Pleasant View Independent Missionary Baptist Church of Nickelsville, where he loved visiting the nursing homes and singing with the choir. He was a dedicated police officer for 30+ years, which was his passion. He also drove a school bus for Scott Co., VA where he loved all his students.

Don proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by his Wife of 61 years Gaye Salyer, his high school sweetheart. Had 4 children; Angela (Johnny) White, Tim (Jill) Salyer, Donna Darnell (Brian Stevens fiancé), and Wes Salyer (Nikki Harris fiancé); Grandchildren; Amber (Everett) Shepard, Madison (Riley) Oppermann, Maddox Salyer, Shiloah Darnell, Tristan (Kaitlin) Salyer, and Andrew Salyer; Great-grandchildren; Destini and Hayley Barnett and Cole Shepard.

Preceded in Death; His parents Ezra and Maggie Salyer and all his siblings. Aaron White (Grandson), Tommy Darnell Jr. (son-in-law), Walana Darnell (granddaughter).

Family will receive friends from 5-7p.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2025, funeral services will follow at 7p.m. Rev. Scott Fields and Rev. Travis Stapleton officiating, with music by Pleasant View Church Choir and Greg and Becky White.

Military graveside service will be held at 11:00a.m., on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at the Cox Salyer Cemetery. American Legion Hammonds Post #3 of Kingsport, TN and Post #265 of Gate City, VA alongside Virginia Army National Guard Funeral Honors team will provide military honors.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the Cox Salyer Cemetery at 10:45a.m. for the graveside service.
