Edith Dockery – Rye Cove, VA
Edith Carter Dockery, 84, Rye Cove, VA went to be with Christ, Thursday, September 11, 2014 at her residence after a long illness.
Edith was born in Scott County, VA on November 11, 1929 to the late Rufus Monroe, Sr. and Myrtle Hartgrove Carter.
She was a former employee of Tennessee Eastman, Scott County School System, and she retired from Ridgecrest Nursing Home. She was also active with the Cub Scouts in the early seventies.
She was a member of Pendleton’s Freewill Baptist Church where she loved to sing in the choir, and with her family. She taught Sunday School and served as Secretary and Treasurer at Riggs Church, which she attended for many years.
In addition to her parents, her husband of 42 years, Ray F. Dockery; brothers, Robert W. Carter, Elmer Earl Carter, Rufus Monroe Carter, Jr., Charles Henry Carter, and an infant brother, Jean Echol Carter; brother-in-law, Ray Kilgore; and nephews, Douglas Carter, Charles Henry Carter, Jr., and Danny Carter preceded her in death.
She is survived by her two sons, David Alan Dockery and wife, Marjorie, Rye Cove, VA, Dennis Keith and wife, Lisa, Marion, VA; grandchildren, Bridgett Dockery Jones, Cody Dockery, Whitney Dockery and James Owens, and Dustin Dockery; great grandchildren, Andrew James and Zoey Michelle Owens; sister, Jo Ann Kilgore, Poquoson, VA; along with several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
One of her best friends was her sister Jo Ann, her caretaker and friend, Karen Frazier Rollins, and lifelong friends, Jewel Carter Daugherty and Roxie Ashworth.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Kevin Sanders officiating. Pendleton’s Chapel Choir will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, September 14, 2014 at Morrison/Carter Cemetery, Rye Cove, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for the graveside service.
