Sherman Dean – Ft. Blackmore, VA
Sherman Dean, 92, Ft. Blackmore, VA passed away, Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at Ridgecrest Manor, Duffield, VA.
Sherman was born in Olinger, VA on November 6, 1928, and was the son of the late Daniel Carter and Lucy (Bowen) Dean.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from the Kingsport Press.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Helen Jean (Carter) Dean; sisters, Laura Gibson, Eva Mae Boggs, and an infant sister; and brothers, Albert, John, Bill, and Robert Lee Dean, and two infant brothers preceded him in death.
Surviving is his daughter, Susan Griffin and husband, Charles, Ft. Blackmore, VA; grandson, Michael Griffin, and brother, Herman “Herm” Dean, Ft. Blackmore, VA; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm., Sunday, September 12, 2021, at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Brother Wayne Stallard officiating. Lori Mellons and the Blood Washed Band will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honors Team, Monday, September 13, 2021, at the Carter Family Cemetery. Taps will be played by Molly Dockery.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the Carter Family Cemetery at 10:45 a.m., Monday for the graveside service.
Due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, anyone attending the services are asked to wear a face covering.
