Barto Glenn Daugherty, Jr., 83, Rye Cove, VA and formerly of Nickelsville, VA passed away, Friday, June 19, 2015 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Glenn was born in Scott County, VA on June 26, 1931. He was the son of the late Barto Glenn, Sr. and Maggie McConnell Daugherty.
Glenn proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Mason Fidelity Lodge #173, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 188; and a member of the Shriners. He worked for 20 years at the Kingsport Press and then retired as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
He attended and was a member of Pendleton’s Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, his first wife, Norma Lea Johnson Daugherty; his brother, Paul Daugherty; a special son, Larry Allen Frazier; and a great granddaughter, Emilee Hazlett preceded him in death.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Jewell Daugherty, Rye Cove, VA; daughter, Trish Harris and Petey, Nickelsville, VA; son , Roger Daugherty and wife, Melinda, Bristol, VA; daughter-in-law, Karen Frazier; grandchildren, Jackie Meade and husband, Sam, Daniel Elliott and wife, DeAnna, Andy Harris, Chandler, Dustin, and Brandon Daugherty; great grandchildren, Tyler and Haylee Hazlett, Brianna Freeman Elliott, and Rylee and Conner Elliott; sisters, Peggy Doctor; Patsy Hughes and friend, John, and Betty Broadwater and friend, Joe; step children, Larry Carter and wife, Mary Jane, Kathy Fugate and husband, Danny, and Roger Carter and wife, Katie; step grandchildren, Lori Potts and husband, Kenny, Natasha Hillman and Megan Carter; step great grandchildren, Tanner, Austin, Michael, and Makayla Potts, Andrew and Allison Trent and Aaliyah Talford; as well as a host of extended family, church family, and friends; and his furry companion, Lucy.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m., Monday, June 22, 2015 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence and the residence of his daughter, Trish Harris. Masonic Services will be conducted at 6:45 p.m. by members of Fidelity Masonic Lodge #173. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Mike Ervin and Rev. P.J. Johnson officiating. His son, Rev. Roger Daugherty will deliver a Eulogy. Pendleton’s Freewill Baptist Church Choir will provide the music along with special selections by his step daughter, Kathy Fugate and Jerri Anna Musick.
Military Graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA, assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Daniel Elliott, Tyler Hazlett, Andy Harris, Chandler, Dustin, and Brandon Daugherty will serve as pallbearers. Glenn’s “Fish Fry Buddies” from Rye Cove Community Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 11:15 a.m., Tuesday to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family wishes to give a special thank you to his friend, Phillip Rutherford for all of his help throughout the years and to the doctors and nursing staff of Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
