Sherman W. Culbertson entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 15, 2009 after a brief, but courageous battle with leukemia at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN.
He was a graduate of Gate City High School and Michigan State University. He enjoyed working with his hands and especially loved farming. He was a retired Scott County School Bus Driver. Sherman was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a devout Christian who passionately studied the Bible. He was previously a deacon, and more recently a Sunday School Teacher at New Beginnings Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a member. His presence will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Culbertson; step father, Ryland Bise; infant daughter, Amanda Culbertson; infant sister, Mary Louise Culbertson; maternal grandparents, Farley and Viola (Trivett) McDavid; paternal grandparents, Dallard and Clara (Carter) Culbertson.
Sherman is survived by his devoted wife, Durel (Carr) Culbertson, who stayed by his side throughout his struggle; daughter, Paula Socha, Kingsport, TN; sons, Wayne Culbertson and wife, Vickie, Richard Culbertson and wife, Lisa, all of Gate City, VA; grandchildren, James Allen Culbertson, Jonathon Carruba, Amanda Carruba, and Nicole Culbertson; mother, Nina (McDavid) Bise; sister, Ethel Conley and husband, Jerry, Gate City, VA; brothers, Tom Culbertson and wife, Jean, Melvin Culbertson and wife, Carrol, all of Gate City, VA, Mark Culbertson and wife, Judy, Franklin, TN; four step grandchildren; and survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, 1018 Catawba Street, Kingsport, TN. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Mark McDavid and Rev. Lennis France officiating.
Sherman will be laid to rest at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 19, 2009 in the Wisely Cemetery, Gate City, VA with Rev. Paul Presley officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home at to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mark Culbertson, Wayne Culbertson, Richard Culbertson, Ben Culbertson, Steve Culbertson, James Allen Culbertson, Rusty Barbour, Michael Austin and Jackie France.
Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Lawson, Larry Potts, Lennis France, Jonathon Carruba, Gary Smith and Morris Gardner.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given in Sherman's name to the Gate City Funeral Home to assist in covering funeral expenses.
