Sallie Mae Compton, 82, Ft. Blackmore, VA passed away, Monday, September 5, 2011 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mrs. Compton was born in Scott County, VA on December 20, 1928, the daughter of the late Garland and Melinda Frances Perry Lane.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Beecher Compton (May 9, 1994); brother, Oscar Palmer Lane; sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise and Darius Gillenwater, Kathleen and Bob Burton; step father, Martin Castle; step brothers, Frank Castle, Brank Castle, and George Castle; and step sisters, Elsie Castle, Elva Castle, and Emogene Castel preceded her in death.
Surviving are her sons, Leland Compton and wife, Wilma, Gate City, VA, R.B. Compton, Ft. Blackmore, VA, and Austin Compton and wife, Teresa, Gate City, VA; daughters, Marie C. Dockery and husband, Billy Joe, Ft. Blackmore, VA, Elva C. Beaver and husband, Bennie, Ft. Blackmore, VA, Mary C. Collier, Ft. Blackmore, VA, and Faye C. Watson and husband, Danny, Ft. Blackmore, VA; grandchildren, LeAnn Barton and husband, Eliot, Lisa Pike and husband, Dale, Cindy Simmons and husband, Jerry, Shannon Dockery and wife, Amanda, Tina Holder and husband, Chris, Jacob Beaver and wife, Jennifer, Susan Cox and husband, Steven, Jamie Collier, Pam Lane and husband, Rodney, Janice Weddle and husband, Jerry, and Robert Berry Compton, Jr.; great grandchildren, Arwen, Sarah, Matthew, Elias, Hannah, Logan, Bristyn, Brylee, Braylon, Bailey, Beth, Kingsley, Brooklyn, Taylor, and Blake; step great grandchildren, Courtney and Kara; brothers, James Martin Castle, Kingsport, TN and Larry Castle and wife, Brenda, Duffield, VA; sisters, Wanda Castle Smith, Harriman, TN, Monnie Burchett and husband, Jim, FL, Barbara Davidson and husband, Willie, Gate City, VA, and Julia Bright, Kingsport, TN; step brother, Fred Castle and wife, Betty, GA; along with several nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Kevin Sanders and Rev. Tommy Holder officiating. Chris Holder and Kevin Sanders will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 9, 2011 at the Compton Family Cemetery, Ft. Blackmore, VA. Jacob Beaver, Shannon Dockery, Rodney Lane, Jerry Weddle, Robert Compton, Steven Cox, Jamie Collier, and Billy Joe Dockery will serve as pallbearers. Phillip Lane, Bennie Beaver, Bobby Burton, Billy Shepherd, and Danny Watson will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m., to go in procession to the graveside service.
