Jimmy Glen Compton, 54, Nickelsville, VA. The Lord called a special man to many people home, after fighting a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, like a bear, on Memorial Day Monday, May 26, 2008, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. He was a great man and generous with all who knew him. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly.
Mr. Compton was born in Scott County, VA on March 7, 1954, son of the late Garland Cecil Compton and Carrie Campbell Compton Vanorstrand.
He is survived by his wife, Vickie Compton, Nickelsville, VA, daughters, Jami Elizabeth Compton and Kelli Suzanne Quillen, both of Nickelsville, VA, son, Johnathan Glen Compton and wife Melinda, Nickelsville, VA, his special mother-in-law, Shirley Nell Fugate, Nickelsville, VA, grandchildren, Tucker James Quillen, Victoria Suzanne Quillen, Charles Levi Quillen and Travis Anderson Compton, sisters, Judy Griffith and husband, "Mayor", Coeburn, VA, Marlene Stapleton and husband, Jerry, Nickelsville, VA. Darlene Rhoton and husband, Cory, Gate City, VA, brothers, Abram Compton and wife, Candy, Middlesboro, FL and Garland Jackson Compton and wife, Martha, Dungannon, VA, Special relatives, Robert and Ruth Fugate. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, several very special nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Beavers, Rev. Joe Barber and the Rev. Steve Collins officiating. Dinah Hicks will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 29, 2008 at the Jim and Vickie Compton Family Cemetery, Nickelsville, VA. Jack Compton, Josh Compton, Timothy Compton, Mitchell Griffith, Colten Stapleton, Eric Begley, Larry Gillespie and Gary Broadwater will serve as pallbearers. Ronald Jordan, Walter Gibson, Mayor Griffith, Jerry Stapleton, Tony McClellan, Kyle Compton and Giles Gillespie will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will be meeting at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 29, 2008 to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family wants to thank Dr. Shipstone and staff at Kingsport Oncology. Also Sarah Cannon (Minnie Pearl) Research in Nashville, Tn.
