Jack Collins – Church Hill, TN
Jack Collins, 84, Church Hill, TN and formerly of Dungannon, VA passed away, Friday, May 15, 2009 at the Wexford House, Kingsport, TN.
He was born in Dungannon, VA on April 11, 1925 to the late Robert and Olga Collins where he lived for over seventy years before moving to Church Hill, TN where he resided for the past eleven years.
He served in the army during WWII where he achieved the rank of sergeant in Company C of the 87th Chemical Mortar Battalion. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Arrowhead and various other ribbons and medals for battles and campaigns at Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, Ardennes and the Rhineland.
He retired from Pittston Coal Company in 1987 after thirty-seven and one half years of service.
He was a Christian and a member of Dungannon United Methodist Church.
While living in Dungannon he served as a town council member for several years and afterward as the town's mayor.
He had many friends and enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Sam, Fred, and Joe Collins and two sisters, Nora Collins Preece and Thelma Collins Stanford.
Surviving is his wife, Barbara Gillenwater Collins, Church Hill, TN, sons and daughters-in-law, Sam and Linda Collins, Gray, TN, Steve and Sandy Collins, Dungannon, VA, and Sid and Becky Collins, Nickelsville, VA, eight grandchildren, Morgan, Sherwin, Jesse, Jamie, Dalton, Lindsay, Daniel and Jennifer, along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, May 17, 2009 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Steve and Sandy Collins. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Steve Collins officiating. Sabra Collins and Jack Troutman will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 18, 2009 at Temple Hill Mausoleum, Castlewood, VA. His nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at Temple Hill for the graveside service.
