Clarence Collett – Blackwater, VA
Clarence Graham Collett, 97, Blackwater, VA, formerly of Ft. Blackmore, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 after a brief illness, in the care of his daughter and son-in-law, Ada and Billy Maness.
Clarence was born in Speers Ferry, VA on April 3, 1920 to the late Henry and Ollie (Kerns) Collett.
He was a veteran of United States Army, serving in WWII. He proudly received his military medals on September 7, 2017 which were previously lost in the flood of 1957.
He lived most of his life in Ft. Blackmore, VA until he moved to Blackwater to be closer to his daughter because of health reasons.
In addition to his parents, the love of his life of 70 years, Ruth (Hall) Collett; son Benny Michael Collett, grandson, Shannon Maness; step dad, Jim Baldwin; 3 sisters and 2 brothers preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughters, Ada (Billy) Maness, Blackwater, VA and Sherry (John) Nelms, Kingsport, TN; sons, Harold Collett, Ft. Blackmore, VA and Roger (Kathy) Collett, Dungannon, VA; grandchildren, Steven (Pam) Maness, Jacob (Paige) Maness, Donnie (Scarlett) Nelms, Amy Nelms, Tracy (Mike) Buckles, Jennifer Collett, David (Pam) Collett, Craig Collett, and Chris Collett; seven great grandchildren and host of nieces, nephews and friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Caris Health Care, MEOC, VA Hospital (Johnson City) and thanks to Mary Schardt for the special love and care she provided.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 5 from 5:00-7:00 p.m., at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at his residence. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p. m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel with Bro. Chris Fields and Evangelist Kenneth Neeley officiating. Pam and Betty Jo Maness will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by the Virginia Army National Honor Guard on Friday, October 6, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the Maness Family Cemetery in the Blackwater Community of Scott County, VA. Grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Great grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are requested to meet at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m., Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
