Pauline Coleman – Gate City, VA
Pauline Smith Coleman, 76, of Gate City, VA, passed away Friday, June 7, 2013, at Asbury Center in Kingsport, TN. She was born in Big Moccasin, Scott County, VA January 9, 1937 to Roy C. and Viola Fuller Smith.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Coleman is preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Walton Coleman, Jr.
Pauline attended school in Scott County and graduated from Shoemaker High School and East Tennessee State University. She taught 8th grade at Shoemaker for a few years in the 1970's. Pauline and her step daughter-in-law (and special friend) Sharron Coleman operated Coleman Reporting Service for many years until she became Clerk of Court for District Court Services in the Scott County court systems. She retired in 2002.
Pauline was a pianist and member of New Hope Methodist Church for many years and Gate City Methodist Church until her health no longer permitted her to attend.
She is survived by her daughter, Jenny Coleman Baty and husband, Tom of Gate City, VA; son, Patrick Smith Coleman of Atlanta, GA; brother, Kyle Smith and wife Charlotte of Nickelsville, VA; step-sons, Samuel W. Coleman III and wife, Kathy of Richmond, VA and Tucker S. Coleman and wife Becky of Gate City, VA; grandchildren, Cole Baty, Nathaniel Baty and Laura Ann Baty; step grandchildren, Walton Coleman, Rebecca Coleman, Sarah Wilson, and Penny Willimann; a special friend, Sharron C. Austin of Bluffton, SC; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and many friends.
The Coleman family will receive friends Monday, June 10, 2013, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Gate City United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the church with Rev. Betzy Elifritz Warren and Pastor Linda Sue Carter Helton officiating. Lisa McConnell will provide the music.
The graveside service for Mrs. Coleman will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.at Francisco Cemetery in Big Moccasin, VA. Cole Baty, Nathaniel Baty, Walton Coleman, Garrett Smith, Gaven Smith, Bruce Carter, and Ronald Smith will serve as pallbearers. Sam Coleman, Tucker Coleman, and Roderick St. Martin will serve as honorary pallbearers.The family will meet at Gate City Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the many sitters and companions from various companies in the area who allowed Pauline to remain in her home as long as she did. They also express gratitude and thanks to the staff of Asbury for their excellent care of Pauline in the last year and a half.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest contributions be made to the Asbury Employee Christmas party fund or to Gate City Methodist Church.
