Helen Jean Casteel, 74, entered into rest Thursday, June 5, 2008 at her residence. She was born on August 28, 1933 in Scott County, VA to the late Oscar Railey Barnette, Sr. and Gladys Kinkead. Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Lovely and Mary Barnette and one brother, Oscar Railey Barnette, 1999. She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Alley Valley Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Lucian "Doll" Casteel, Gate City, VA; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and David Casteel, Ft. Blackmore, VA; brother and sister-in-law, Freddie and Beverly Barnette, Ft. Blackmore, VA; sisters and brothers-in-law, Opal and Lester Gillenwater, Kingsport, TN, Rita and Dale Page, Gate City, VA; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Barnette, Church Hill, TN; her baby boy, Jayden Barnette, Ft. Blackmore, VA; grandson, Phillip Starnes; several nieces, nephews and many friends. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Willie Neeley and Rev. Dewey Shaffer officiating. Music will be provided by the Eddie Roberts family and Wayne Sanders. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2008 at Lawson Cemetery, Ft. Blackmore, VA. The family will meet at 10 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wayne Sanders, Ronnie Hammonds, Rick Fansler, Steve Ferguson, George Gibson, Brandon Hicks, Sam Poole and Bill Hammonds. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Kendrick, Eddie Roberts, Michael Roberts and Odene Darnell. Gate City Funeral Home is serving the Casteel family.
