Calvin C. Calhoun – Manville, VA
Calvin C. “Poppy” Calhoun, 93, Manville, VA went to be with the Lord after a history of illness on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Nova Health and Rehab, Weber City, VA.
Born in Scott County, VA on June 15, 1923, he was the son of the late Charlie and Lilly (Lane) Calhoun.
He was a carpenter by trade and lived most of his life in the Manville community.
He was a member of Alley’s Chapel United Methodist Church and a devoted volunteer at the Manville Ruritan.
Calvin was a faithful and loving husband of 69 years, a wonderful and devoted father; and a proud and very special Papaw and Great Papaw.
In addition to his parents, his loving wife, Helen Mae; son, Mark Anthony; brothers, Bill and Bascom; and sisters, Henrietta, Helen, Mary, JoAnne and Dorothy preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Larry Edward and Judith Ann Calhoun of Gray, TN; grandchildren, Tracy Calhoun, Jamey Calhoun, and Amanda Lyon and husband, Earl; great granddaughter, Katie Johnson; daughter-in-law, Sandy Calhoun and husband, Joe Defenderfer; brother, Johnny Calhoun and wife, Nancy; sister, Ruby Nelms; sister-in-law, Rosie Calhoun; along with many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, July 7, 2016 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Bob Cloud and Rev. Clint Ramey officiating. The Tipton Family Singers will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Pendleton Cemetery, Manville, VA. Danny Calhoun, Dwain Calhoun, Pat Davis, Brock Bowman, Dwight Lane, Walter Cassell, Rob Hager and Raymond Pendleton will serve as pallbearers. “The Manville Boys” will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m., Friday to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family wishes to convey their special thanks to the staff of NOVA and his special caregivers, Marlene, Dakota, and Paul for their love and care during his illness.
