Mr. Lindsey Stephen Burke, 55, Nickelsville, VA went home to be with the Lord suddenly Saturday — June 15th, 2013 due to an accidental drowning.
Steve was born May 22, 1958 to the late Herman Burke and Phyllis Ferguson Bays. He made his home in the Big Moccasin Community with his wife of 25 years, Louise and his precious daughter, Lindsey. He was a patriotic Christian man of generosity, love, and kindness. He will be greatly missed by his family and community.
Steve was a graduate of Gate City High School. Shortly, after graduation he began serving in the US Navy. After 10 years of service he received a medical discharge. Steve was later employed by Indian Path Hospital in the maintenance department for 17 years. He was a Mason and a Shriner.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jenny Burke Staples; his step-father, Howard E. Bays; and father-in-law, Paul "Pete" Manis.
He is survived by his wife, Ella Louise Burke, Nickelsville; daughter, Lindsey Virginia Burke, Nickelsville; mother, Phyllis Ferguson Bays, Nickelsville; sister, Karen Burke, Gate City; brothers, Mark Burke and wife, Carolyn, Nickelsville; David and wife, Yolanda, Hiltons; step-sister, Rhonda Phillips, Nickelsville; mother-in-law Shelby Jean Manis, Church Hill; sister-in-law, Linda Craft and husband, Johnny, Church Hill; brother-in-law, John Staples, Nickelsville. He was also survived by his very special nieces and nephews; Morgan Jennings, Sarah Burke, Laura Ramsey, Adam Burke, Savanna Phillips, and Josh Light. He will be greatly missed by his faithful four-legged friend, Mickey.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM, Wednesday, June 19th, 2013 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his mother. Masonic services will be conducted by Stuart Masonic Lodge #224 at 7:00 PM in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel. Services will follow conducted by Larry Spivey and Richard Harris. Music will be provided by Tony Peters and the Roadside Mission Quartet.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11 AM, Thursday, June 20th, 2013 at Holston View Cemetery by America Legion Post 265 and Post 3, along with members of the VA National Guard.
Eddie Ferguson, Larry Ferguson, Johnny Ferguson, Arthur Ferguson, Charles Osborne, and Richard Osborne will serve as pallbearers. John Ferguson, Ed Ferguson, John Staples, and Adam Burke will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the graveside services.
