Marie Sawyer Brickey – Ft. Blackmore, VA
Marie Sawyer Brickey, 95, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Brookhaven Nursing Home.
Marie was born February 6, 1919 in Martin, KY, but resided in Fort Blackmore, VA for the majority of her life. She was a gifted singer, musician, songwriter, poet and playwright; her plays, skits, and songs were performed at various churches and events in the Scott County, VA area. When Marie was 16 years of age, her skill in playing the guitar gained the attention of A.P. Carter of the locally renowned Carter Family, and he approached her parents asking for their permission to allow Marie to play for their group, but due to her young age they did not give their consent. A story that Marie wrote about her early years in Southwest Virginia was featured in the book “Miners’ Lamps and Cold Mountain Winters: Tales from the Good Old Days in Southwest Virginia” published by Hometown Memories Publishing. She was a mighty prayer warrior, and was much beloved by her family, friends, and all who were privileged to know her.
Marie attended Christian Life Center of the Tri-Cities, and was of the Pentecostal faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Boyd and Mary (Mutter) Sawyer; her husband, Roy G. Brickey; son, Roger Brickey; five brothers, Walter, Arthur (Ott), Robert (Mac), Charles, and Paul Sawyer; three sisters, Martha Sawyer, Ann (Sawyer) Grubb, and Olga (Sawyer) Kilgore.
She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Patsy and John Perry, and MaryAnn and Gary Blevins; precious daughter-in-law, Deanna (Fraysier) Brickey, two granddaughters,, Krisanne (Peters) Hickman and husband, Tim, Traci (Blevins) and husband, Patrick Frizzell; four grandsons, Lynn and Lori Brickey, Steve and JoAnn Peters, Marty Blevins and Eric and Nalani Peters; 5 great granddaughters, Sharlyn (Hickman) Pierce and husband, Tyler , Maizee Peters, Kana Peters, Alanna Peters, and Kalea Holland; seven great grandsons, Shane Fitzgerald, Brent Fitzgerald, Spencer Hickman, Tyler Peters, Hunter Blevins, Mac Brickey, and Blad Brickey; one great great grandson, Cayde Fitzgerald.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Monday, December 8, 2014 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Eddie Johnson and Rev. Keith Barker officiating. Charles Hickman will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at the Brickey Cemetery, Methodist Camp Ground, Ft. Blackmore, VA. Spencer Hickman, Steve Peters, Hunter Blevins, Lynn Brickey, Mac Brickey, Blad Brickey, and Tyler Pierce will serve as pallbearers. Tim Hickman, Gary Blevins, Marty Blevins, Eric Peters, John Perry, and Carl Kiser will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for the graveside service.
The family would like to acknowledge Alice McConnell, Elsie Begley, Brenda Pittman, Jenny Sue Dowless, Gary Blevins, Rex Sawyer, and Jimmy and Betty Joe Sawyer who were much beloved by Marie and were so loving and attentive to her.
