Ralph J. Bowman – Gate City, VA Ralph J. Bowman, 89, Gate City, VA passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center. Mr. Bowman was born in Scott County, VA on July 3, 1921. He was the son of the late Charlie Oscar and Gay Elizabeth Maxfield Bowman. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II, he worked at the Kingsport Press and retired from Daugherty Brothers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Betty Lou Bowman and an infant great granddaughter, Hailey Lipe. Surviving is his wife, Mae Etta Bowman, Gate City, VA; daughter, Frances Lipe, Gate City, VA; grandchildren, Donna Sloan and husband, Mike, Dwayne Lipe, Doug Lipe and wife, Regina, and Darla Lipe; great grandchildren, Josh Sloan, Matthew Lundy, Kaitlyn Sloan, Shy McGinnis, and Mia Lipe. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his daughter, Frances Lipe. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. George Winegar officiating. Salley's Chapel Trio will provide the music. Military graveside services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m., Friday, November 5, 2010 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post # 3, Kingsport, TN and Post # 265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Shannon Greear will serve as an honorary pallbearer. Family and friends will be meeting at the funeral home at 12:00 p.m., Friday to go in procession to the graveside.
