John Steel Bowen, 82, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 9, 2009. Born August 19, 1926 in Scott County, VA to Samuel H. Bowen and Lila Williams Bowen. He spent his childhood on Powell Mountain in Scott County and the coal mining community of Pardee, VA.
As a young teenager growing up in the Depression, John joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) and served the Grottoes, VA camp. While there, he helped build the Blue Ridge Parkway. At 17, John joined the US Navy and was stationed at Camp Peary in Williamsburg, VA. He was later assigned to Treasure Island Naval Base in San Francisco, CA. He was involved in the Battle of Okinawa in the South Pacific Theater during World War II.
In 1948, John met the love of his life, Jamie Qualls and they were married on December 31, 1948 in Harlan, KY. John and Jamie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary is 2008.
John became a Christian on May 22, 1960 and was baptized the following Sunday. He was a lifelong member of West End Baptist Church, Gate City, VA.
John was an employee of Kingsport Press and later Mead Paper where he retired in 1992 after 41 years of service.
He was an avid hunter and always looked forward to his time spent hunting deer and turkey at his cabin in High Knob, VA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Bernice Bowen, Bonnie Rollins and Corrine Nix. His brothers, Glenn Bowen, James Bowen and Carter Bowen.
Survivors include his wife, Jamie Qualls Bowen, Clinchport, VA; Sons, Ricky J. Bowen and wife, Teresa, Mt. Carmel, TN; Timothy J. Bowen and wife, Teresa, Kingsport, TN; Daughter, Sherry L. Belicza and husband, Lazlo, Elkridge, MD. Five grandchildren, Greg John Bowen; Josh Matthew Cregger and wife, Angel; Trisha Lynn Cregger; Chase Edward Hamly; Tessa Marie Hamly and Nathan Seth Bowen. Three great grandchildren, Cody John Bowen and girlfriend, Harley; Whitney Hawkins; Josh Matthew Cregger, Jr., and Aiden Steel Rice. Brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl Bowen and Judy; Coy Bowen and Wanda; Bill Bowen and Betty; Lester Bowen; Mrs. James (Ginger) Bowen; Mrs. Jean Mullins; Mrs. Carter (Cozette) Bowen; Sisters and Brothers-in-law, Ruby Wells; Nadine Williams and Herbert; Lorraine Mullins and Roscoe. Several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be held at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastors Billy Tignor and Mel Rogers officiating. Music will be provided by Linda Brandon, Pat Galloway and Gaynelle Smith.
Military graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2009 at VA Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, TN with the Gate City Post #265 and American Legion Hammond Post #3. The family will meet at the cemetery for the graveside service.
