Robert F. Bond, Sr., 85, passed away peacefully at home, with his family present, after an extended illness.

He was a former Southwestern Virginia resident, but spent much of his retirement in Deland, Florida. A World War II veteran and graduate of Emory and Henry College, he fashioned a career and raised his family in Pound, Virginia.

Mr. Bond was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Medical Core during the Battle of the Bulge.

He was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Johnny Webb, Holly Webb and Robbie Webb; sisters, Fern Kilgore and Marjorie Dixon; brothers, Verl Bond, Clyde Bond, and Jack Bond.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Yoakley Bond, Williamsburg, KY; a son, Robert F. Bond, Jr, MD, also of Williamsburg, KY, his wife Pennie; two daughters, Jane Bond Hughes, of Wise, VA, her husband Jimmy, and Jean Bond Webb, of Richmond, KY, her husband, Johnny; one sister, Ann Bond Powers, of Knoxville, TN; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Steve Collins officiating. Music will be provided by Jennifer England and Linda Hillman.

Military graveside rites will held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2008 at the Nickelsville Cemetery, Nickelsville, VA with the American Legion Hammond Post #265 and Gate City Post #3 and the VA Army National Honor Guard. The family will meeting at the cemetery for the graveside service. Pallbearers will be Jerry Kilgore, George Isaac, Robert England, Dwight Jessee, James David Hughes and Patrick Webb.
