Billy Wayne Gilmer was called home on January 12.
Billy Wayne leaves behind: his wife of 56 years, Joyce Gilmer; his children: Vance & Tina Gilmer, Chris & Kathy Gilmer, and Ginger & Jeremy McClain; his grandchildren: Cori & Logan Mullins, Conner Gilmer, Chloe Gilmer, Colten Gilmer, and Colten McLain; his siblings: Johnny & Gail Gilmer, Susie & Kelly Stapleton, Patricia Ann Castle, and Tommy & Debbie Gilmer; a host of nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
Billy Wayne was born and raised in Nickelsville, Virginia. He attended Nickelsville Methodist Church most of his life.
Billy Wayne began his working career at Southern Railway, and this sparked a lifelong passion for the railroad and trains. He later moved into the position that he retired from as the Director of Public Works of Scott County. He was a lifelong farmer.
Bill spent the latter years of his life doing what he loved, farming and spending time with family. He began his mornings with an appreciation of a new day and the opportunity to make the most of it. Whether it was taking care of the cattle, working on a fence, or maintaining equipment, Billy Wayne enjoyed every moment with a full and happy heart. He will be remembered for his extraordinary work ethic and willingness to lend a helping hand for sure, but it is his larger-than-life happy-go-lucky personality that will be missed the most. He had a smile that lit up his whole face and it was contagious. He had an innate ability to lift others up, whether it was opening a door for a stranger or goofing off with those around him, and his love of life and one-of-a-kind sense of humor left people and places better for having known him.
Billy Wayne will be honored in a Celebration of Life at Nickelsville Methodist Church January 14. Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a celebration service to follow at the church.
