Jerry W. (Babe) Bellamy – Gate City, VA
Jerry W. (Babe) Bellamy, 69, Gate City, VA passed away, Tuesday, March 3, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Babe was born in Sullivan County, TN on March 9, 1945 to the late R.S. and Mattie H. Bellamy.
In addition to his parents; his brother, Walker Bellamy; infant sister, Peggy Bellamy; step-brother, Nelson Williams; step-sister, Nina Fields and my Christian hero, father-in-law, Joseph W. Carter, JR preceded him in death.
Babe loved to sing and attend several singing schools in the area. He was also a member of Oak Glen’s Choir. Babe was instrumental in the building of two area churches: Victory Baptist, Gate City and Oak Glen Baptist. He loved sports and had been an outstanding baseball player. He played twice in the Over Forty Baseball World Series in New Orleans. In his later years he played golf and loved taking Eli fishing. Eli always traveled with papaw and loved to work with him. Eli made sure his tool belt matched papaws. Babe always had time to go to Oak Glen and make sure everything was working. This was where his special little friend, Manny, was always willing to help him.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Carter Bellamy, Gate City, VA; daughters, April Bellamy, Gate City, VA, Joanna Edens and husband, Aaron, Weber City, VA; grandson, Eli Edens; brother, Joe (Jackie) Bellamy, Gate City, VA; sisters, Tammy Williams, Tracy Brickey; nieces, Lisa Castle and husband, Mike, Riley Castle, Margurette Brickey; nephews, Jason Castle and wife, Holly, Josh Castle and wife, Jessee, Jaden Castle; special cousin, Wayne McClelland and wife, Cathy; special neighbors, Don Frazier, Darrell, Rita, Mickey and Jason Lane, Johnny, Ina Rae, John, Mickey and Christy Miller; special friends, Saunders Jackson and wife, Linda, Mack Price and wife, Linda, Dwight Smith and wife, Glenda, Johnny Musick and wife, Darenda, M.J. Mann and wife, Betty and Howard Gardner; special little friend, Manny De Leon.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at the Oak Glen Baptist Church and other times at the residence of his wife, Phyllis. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Oak Glen Baptist Church with Danny Sykes officiating. The Oak Glen Choir will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and #265, Gate City, VA. Don Frazier, Darrell Lane, Johnny Miller, Wayne McClelland, Howard Gardner, Mike Castle and Bruce Hobbs will serve as pallbearers. Saunders Jackson, Johnny Musick, Mack Price, Dwight Smith, M.J. Mann and the Men’s Class Oak Glen will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for the graveside service.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the administrators, nurses and therapists of Nova Health and Rehabilitation Center for their concern, care and compassion they showed our loved one.
