Mr. Howard E. Bays, 72, Nickelsville, VA went home to be with the Lord at his home following a courageous battle with cancer over the last year.
Howard was born on June 22, 1939 to the late Carl and Tempia Bays and lived in the Big Moccasin community with his wife, Phyllis. He was a man of generosity, love, and a strong Christian faith to all that knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family and community. He was a member of Roadside Mission Baptist Church. His life work was construction and carpentry. After retiring he became active in the Baptist Association and was a strong believer in supporting local churches and sponsoring the Worldwide Children's Missions.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Louevela Barker; and step daughter, Jenny Burke Staples.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Phyllis Ferguson Bays, Big Moccasin community; daughter, Rhonda Bays Phillips and granddaughter, Savanna Phillips, Nickelsville, VA; step children, Karen Burke, Gate City, VA, Steve and Louise Burke and Mark and Carolyn Burke, Nickelsville, VA, David and Yolanda Burke, Hiltons, VA, and John Staples, Kingsport, TN; step grandchildren, Morgan Jennings, Sarah Burke, Laura Jennings, Adam Burke, Lindsey Burke, Kadence Jennings, and Kyle Fields; brother, Jarrell and Ann Bays, Nickelsville, VA; and nieces, Lois Hurd and Margaret Elam, Nickelsville, VA.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence or the home of his daughter, Rhonda Bays Phillips. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bob Lane and Rev. G.W. White officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Mike Carrico, Adam Burke, Eddie Ferguson, Larry Ferguson, Johnny Ferguson, Arthur Ferguson, Charles Osborne, and Richard Osborne will serve as pallbearers. Pat Vermillion, Zane Parks, John Ferguson, Ed Ferguson,Paul Repass, and Wayne Poteet will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:15 p.m. to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family would like to thank all of Howard's doctors, nurses, and especially Hospice.
