Shelburne Barker – Clinchport, VA
Shelburne Henry Barker, 83, Clinchport, VA passed away, Saturday, January 10, 2015 after a brief illness.
Shelburne was born in Scott County, VA on January 14, 1931 to the late James Lawrence (J.L.) and Rosa Carter Barker.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Gladys Scalf Barker; brother Chester Barker; and nephew, Steve Neeley preceded him in death.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving as a Corporal /Medic in Berlin Germany from 1951 – 1953. He owned and operated Barker’s Esso with his father for 15 years.
He was a deputy sheriff with the Scott County Sheriff’s Department with 23 years of service.
Shelburne was a member of Morrison City Christian Church, Kingsport, TN and a family man with a deep undying love for his wife, Gladys and daughter, Pam.
Surviving is his daughter, Pam Shirey and Wayne Elkins, Kingsport, TN; sisters, Eva Neeley, Kingsport, TN, Clarcie Lane, Rye Cove, VA, Carol Absher and husband, Edward, Kingsport, TN, and Freddie Lewis and husband, Ross, Griffin, GA; half brother, Worley Carter and wife, Retta, Clinchport, VA; special niece, Ginger Brandon and husband, Rick, Kingsport, TN; along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Monday, January 12, 2015 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 13, 2015 in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Minister Bob Underwood officiating.
Burial will follow the service at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Morrison City Christian Church, 1940 Darnell Drive, Kingsport, TN 37665 in the name of Shelburne Henry Barker.
