Dr. Marrion Lee Baker, 81, a lifelong resident of Scott County, Virginia passed away Friday, October 17, 2008, due to complications from heart surgery.
Lee, as he was known, was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Gate City and the Stragglers Sunday school class.
He graduated from Shoemaker High School as salutatorian of his class.
During World War II, he served on the USS Fargo with Vice Admiral Berry's Flagship in the Mediterranean Sea. After his naval service, he attended the Medical College of Virginia and graduated from the College of Pharmacy where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Honor Leadership Fraternity and Phi Si Pharmacy Fraternity.
On his return to Scott County, he purchased Thomas Drug Store and later Gate City Pharmacy, which he operated for forty years. He was past member of the Executive Council of the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association. Lee was the founder of the Baker Hearing Service, and was appointed to the State Board of Hearing Specialists. Lee and his mother owned Park Street Antiques and he served as past president of the East Tennessee Antique Society. He was a member of the Gate City Lions Club, where he was also a past president. He belonged to the Sons of the American Revolution.
He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Ingle and Florida Parker Baker, sister, Charlene Sherman, brother, Joe P. Baker and nephew, Weldon R. Sherman, Jr.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence K. and Edwinna Baker, Gate City, VA, nephews, James Belt Baker, Gate City, VA, David L. and wife, Teresa Cheung-Baker, Brooklyn, NY, Jeffrey L. and wife, Ruth Baker, Lakeland, FL, nieces, Diane J. Thomas, Knoxville, TN, Carol S. and husband, The Reverend John Moloney, Baton Rouge, LA, Josephine and husband, Tom Herron, Kingsport, TN along with several great nephews, great nieces and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2p.m., Sunday, October 26, 2008 in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home with the Rev. John Moloney, the Rev. Mark Estepp and the Rev. Steve Brown officiating. Music will be presented by Mr. Brian Underwood. Visitation will be prior to the service.
