Allen Ray Adkins, 65, Weber City, VA passed away, Monday, December 09, 2013 at Select Specialty Hospital, Bristol, TN after a brief illness.
Ray was born in Tazewell County, VA on February 5, 1948 to Allen Adkins and the late Peggy Harrison Irvin.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the 1st Air-Cav 8th Battalion "Jumping Mustangs", the 1st Special Forces Group, 5th Special Forces Group Green Beret; and MAC V. SOG in Vietnam; he also served in Desert Storm with the 1030th Engineering Battalion of the Virginia National Guard, and was a member of the Virginia Defense Force.
He was retired from the Virginia State Police after 33 years as a Master Trooper and later worked with Weber City Police Department.
In addition to his mother, his sister Glenda Hartley; brother, Randy Adkins, and half brother, Joey Irvin preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Johnston Adkins, Weber City, VA; son, Wesley Adkins and wife, Rebecca, Kingsport, TN; father, Allen Adkins, Wise, VA; grandson, Zachary Adkins; sister, Donna Fowler, Indianapolis, IN; half sisters, Kimberly Irvin, Indianapolis, IN and Tammy McGuire, Indianapolis, IN; half brothers, Greg Adkins, Wise, VA and David Adkins, Norton, VA; several nieces, nephews, and brothers-in-law.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m., Friday, December 13, 2013 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with his former VSP Shift partner, Rev. Gary C. Cope officiating.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN, Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard and the Virginia State Police Honor Guard.
Virginia State Police will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the graveside service escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders.
